WHAT WE DO
Investment Advisory
Each individual and each family is unique. Each has its own wants, needs, constraints and risk tolerance. Many also have operating businesses or legacy assets. That’s why, as the first step in any relationship, we build a unique Investment Policy Statement for the family. We review that target model on a regular basis in line with changing markets, opportunities and threats and evolving family circumstances. Sometimes, there are family entities and foundations with an overlay of unique requirements or constraints for which we will make necessary adaptations.
From this basis we begin the work of portfolio construction. First, we review the family’s existing portfolio. And to the extent that it aint broke, we don’t fix it. But inevitably there are necessary changes, sometimes at the margins but often fundamental. We go about making those changes, guiding the portfolio over time towards the family’s target allocation. In doing so we use our deep bench of approved passive instruments, third party funds and account managers to construct a diversified portfolio.
The implementation of portfolios is done through third party instruments – passive and active funds and managers. We believe that our time is best used in making top-level allocation decisions and conducting rigorous diligence on managers, rather than picking individual stocks or bonds.
We source broadly from around the world, talking to other professional family offices, existing management teams and our clients. We look for excellence. Due diligence looks at quality of management teams, their business model and internal dynamics, strategy risks and rewards, external factors, constraints and liquidity. Opportunities are vetted by multiple team members, with the aim of creating constructive tension as we try identify weaknesses in the business proposition. We monitor management team performance, both those in which we have invested and many we have not. And we watch changing macro trends and consider likely impact on a given manager’s strategy over the investment period.
